Chapter 12

“Fancy meeting you here,” I said in greeting, looking around for Liam. “Where’s Rumpleforeskin?”

“You’re a modern-day Shakespeare, truly. He’s following up a lead. I’m interviewing a couple of the survivors here at the hospital today. I’ve just come back from meeting with the explosives expert. Who are your friends?”

“Poppy, Ophelia, this is Detective Jake Llewyn. He’s one of the detectives working this case. I’ve worked with him before; his partner, Liam, is the reason shampoo bottles have instructions, but Jake can be trusted.”

A knowing smile crossed Ophelia’s face. “Yes, that the two of you are in a relationship tells me you trust him.”

“Seriously?” I asked, my mouth dropping open. “How?”

“I told you—secrets are impossible when she’s around,” Poppy said, shaking her head.

“Are we really that obvious?” Jake asked. “What’s your connection to this case?”

“Yes, and we’re investigating on behalf of Valantir,” Ophelia replied. “Charlie’s team and mine have joined forces to gather information and find the person responsible for this attack. What did the explosives expert say?”

Jake’s gaze moved from one of us to the other.

“It’s fine,” I said. “We’ve checked them out. They’re telling the truth. You can trust me.”

Jake considered my words for a moment then nodded and leaned casually against the hood of his Charger. I tried not to think about how much I wanted to tear his clothes off right now. Okay, maybe that was why Ophelia had instantly picked up that we were a couple.

“We learned a decent amount,” he said. “They confirmed that a burner cell phone was used to set off the bomb. Basically, as soon as someone called the burner cell’s number, the fuse was triggered and the bomb was set off.”

“Do they know what the bomb was made of?” I asked.

“The bomb maker used peroxide explosives, common ingredients in homemade bombs. This specific one was TATP.”

“I’ve never heard of it.”

“It’s what the shoe bomber used, or tried to, anyway,” Ophelia said.

Jake nodded. “That’s right. It was also used in a number of terrorist attacks in Europe in the past twenty years. It’s pretty easy to make with ingredients you can find at any pharmacy. It’s also highly, highly dangerous. An explosion of even a single gram can cause injury. The bomb didn’t have to be big. To give you an idea, TATP is about eighty percent as powerful as TNT.”

“How easy is it to make?” Poppy asked.

“Anyone with internet access, nail polish, and hair bleach can get it done, if they’re smart enough not to blow themselves up in the process,” Jake explained. “And you have to factor in that someone might have gotten lucky. However, the cell phone detonator is a little bit more complex. And there’s also the fact that TATP is extremely sensitive. For this to have gone off the way the bomb maker intended, they would have had to be skilled.”

“That leads us back to the theory that it could be someone linked to this group, rather than a random person trying to kill Tom Kidd,” Ophelia said.
